These “projects” exist at all levels,- as fragments of discovery of the culture of dissent, probing notions of individual and community rights through collective dialogue & action, or analysis and commentary on psycho-cultural spaces of the socio-political. A range of subjects have been explored- from lingual/national identities, inquiries into judicial justice or education as forms of dissent, sexuality rights or conflict & democracy…

These representations and processes could lead to further work in the areas, through collaborations, synergies and guidance.

Using autos:

1. leads to a huge carbon footprint
2. is expensive if the cumulative cost of to and fro is calculated
3. encourages the control that the auto rickshaw union has on customers
4. is known to be extremely convenient. Hence it promotes the habit of waking up fifteen minutes before 9 am, rushing to the mess, skipping breakfast and running to college 3 minutes before the sign up sheet closes. Looking at such a loop everyday, one can blame this on the convenience that the auto rickshaw provides us with.

Using bicycles:

1. ensures some amount of exercise on a daily basis
2. is ten times cheaper than an auto rickshaw
3. leads to almost zero carbon footprint

1. Cost of an auto:

SFS colony to Srishti per person: Rs 15- Rs 20

Individual cost per month: Rs 40 (two ways) X 30 days = Rs 1200

2. Bicycling costs:

Amount charged to fill air: Re 1

Number of times one needs to fill air per month: Maximum 3

The IG Khan Memorial Trust invites artists and writers from across the world to contribute photo/ graphic short stories on the broad themes of conflict and social justice. Artists/writers are free to interpret this theme in any way, as long as the central idea of equity and justice comes through. We welcome innovative treatments of popular narratives, short vignettes from ongoing struggles, or an exploration of the power structures and struggles in situations that are considered everyday.

A collection of selected stories will be published online by the Trust, as well as used for its February 2010 event cum exhibition in the form of posters/ brochures/ other print forms. The Trust will also attempt to publish this collection of work in the future.

Entries would be prefered are in black and white. Low res jpgs should be sent in via yousendit.com to igkhan.memorialtrust@gmail.com

Selections will be made by January 30th. Authors of selected entries will have to send  high res tiff/ pdf files soon after. Copyright to the work will lie with the authors.

About the IG Khan Memorial Trust:

The Trust was formed in memory of Dr IG Khan, historian and social activist based in Aligarh Muslim University(AMU), who was killed in February 2003. Known for his sense of compassion and justice, IG’s was a fearless voice that refused to be cowed in its commitment to the rights of the poor and the oppressed. His sense of humour and gift for touching people’s lives won him friends from across the world, and across every social class.

The Trust, formed by his family, works with the  core vision of continuing IG Khan’s works for social justice, including through his union for cycle rickshaw pullers in Aligarh. The Trust works to provide a network of social and economic support to these vulnerable migrant workers and their families, including interventions for medical aid and education for their children. The Trust also hosts an annual event in Aligarh Muslim University in February, that aims to bring an array of world class minds to the campus, and create exposure to their ideas and work for students and the larger academic community.

Ever wondered what happens to company logos and signs after use? Most get thrown away, and a few are turned into art.

‘Character’, a Finnish company, recycles old company signs and turns them into design artifacts. They are cleaned up, protected from rain and put together with a power cord and LEDs with a life span of 30,000 hours.

The Cartier Award for emerging artists living outside the UK is a major initiative by Frieze Projects in collaboration with Gasworks and sponsored by Cartier.

Artists are invited to propose a new work to be realised at Frieze Art Fair 2010, which will be produced under the auspices of Frieze Projects. Proposed works may take the form of site-specific installation; performance; film; video or print work.

The Cartier Award is open to non-UK-based artists within five years of graduating from an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or under 30 years of age.

The recipient of the prize will have the unique opportunity to present their work at Frieze Art Fair 2010 to a major international audience. Additionally the prize will cover production costs of up to 10,000 GBP, an artist’s fee, per diems, travel expenses and a studio residency at Gasworks in London from August to October 2010.

Applicants will be judged on the innovative nature of their proposal and its suitability for realisation at Frieze Art Fair.
